Common Allergies and Intolerances
- Low FODMAP: A dietary approach designed to help manage symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and other functional gastrointestinal disorders. FODMAP stands for fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols — short-chain carbohydrates that can be poorly absorbed in the small intestine.
- Allium Intolerance: This refers to an adverse reaction to alliums, a group of vegetables that includes garlic, onions, leeks, shallots, and chives. Symptoms can vary and may include digestive issues or skin reactions.
- Sesame Allergies: An allergy to sesame seeds or sesame oil that can trigger allergic reactions in some individuals, ranging from mild symptoms to severe anaphylaxis.
- Gluten Sensitivities: This can refer to non-celiac gluten sensitivity, which is a condition where individuals experience symptoms related to gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye, but do not have celiac disease or a wheat allergy. Symptoms can include bloating, abdominal pain, and fatigue.
- Shellfish Allergies: Allergies to shellfish can include reactions to crustaceans (like shrimp, crab, lobster) and mollusks (like clams, oysters, and squid). This allergy can lead to severe reactions and is one of the more common food allergies.
- Tree Nut Allergies: This allergy involves reactions to nuts that grow on trees, such as almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts, cashews, and pistachios. It can also lead to serious allergic reactions.
